Two ways to buy data
Italy's plans split into two shapes. The fixed data tier fixes a data amount against a validity window, from 1GB over 7 days up to 50GB over 30 days, running on Iliad and Vodafone's 4G and 5G networks. The unlimited tier drops the data cap and instead prices by the number of days, from a single day up to 30, running on Iliad and Wind Tre's 3G and 4G networks. Neither tier includes 5G on the daily unlimited side, so anyone who wants a 5G connection needs a fixed data plan.
Matching data to the trip
A short visit of a few days sits well on either a small fixed data plan or a 1 to 3 day unlimited pass, depending on how much video or navigation use is expected. A longer stay of two to four weeks lines up with the 30 day options on both sides: the 10GB, 20GB or 50GB fixed data plans, or the 30 day unlimited plan. Someone unsure how much data a trip will use can start with a mid size fixed data plan and add a second one later rather than committing to the largest unlimited pass upfront.
Rail travel and data use
Frecciarossa high-speed trains, run by Trenitalia, offer an onboard Wi-Fi service. Travelers spending long stretches of a trip on these trains between cities have a second source of connectivity for that portion of the journey, which can make a smaller fixed data plan enough to cover the days spent off the train.
